Veteran Opposition Leader Dr. Kizza Besigye Charged with Treason
Kampala, Uganda – February 20, 2025 – Veteran opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, along with his aide Hajj Obeid Lutale and UPDF officer Capt. Denis Oola, has been charged with treason for allegedly plotting to overthrow the Ugandan government by force. The charges, based on a charge sheet dated February 20, 2025, claim the trio was involved in organizing military training in Kenya, soliciting financial and logistical support, and expressing intent to oust the government between 2023 and November 2024.

According to prosecution, the alleged conspiracy extended beyond Uganda, with activities linked to Switzerland, Greece, Kenya, and Uganda. Additionally, the prosecution has filed a charge of Misprision of Treason against the accused for failing to report the purported plot.

The legal team representing Besigye and his co-accused has strongly denied the allegations, labeling them as politically motivated. “These charges are baseless and designed to stifle political dissent,” said one of the defense attorneys. They have also confirmed their intention to seek bail for their clients.
The case has already sparked debate across the political landscape, with supporters of Besigye condemning the move as an attempt to silence opposition voices. Meanwhile, government officials have maintained that the prosecution is based on credible evidence.

As the case unfolds, human rights organizations and political analysts are closely monitoring the developments, with concerns raised over the potential implications for political freedoms in Uganda.
