Soroti, Uganda – In a symbolic act of commitment and reconciliation, the National Unity Platform (NUP) on Monday handed over several calves to seven prominent elders from the Teso sub-region, signaling the party’s pledge to prioritize compensation and justice for past injustices should it assume power in the 2026 general elections.
The gesture took place at Eneku Village in Soroti City, ahead of a major address by NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, who is meeting party leaders and supporters from across Teso.
Speaking during the ceremony, Kyagulanyi emphasized that the calves were not mere gifts, but a token of NUP’s deeper commitment to healing and restitution.
“This is just the beginning. We know the pain and loss the people of Teso have endured for decades, especially through cattle raids and wars that robbed you of your livelihoods,” said Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu. “If we are trusted with leadership in 2026, our first act in government will be to ensure full and fair compensation to restore the dignity and economy of this region.”
The Teso region, which was heavily affected by conflicts and cattle rustling in the 1980s and 1990s, has for years called on the government for compensation—calls that have largely gone unheeded.
The event, attended by elders, youth representatives, and NUP coordinators, was widely received as a historic political gesture that may shape support for the party in Eastern Uganda.
“This is not just politics. It is a message of hope and restoration,” added Kyagulanyi. “We are not here to use the people — we are here to walk with them into a better future.”
Bobi Wine is expected to officially address Teso NUP leaders later today, outlining the party’s vision for the region, including agricultural revitalization, youth empowerment, and infrastructure development.
The visit is part of a broader mobilization tour aimed at consolidating support ahead of the 2026 elections, where NUP is positioning itself as the main challenger to the ruling government.
