Gen. Elwelu Backs Echodu, Says Soroti City West Needs Strong Leadership

Former Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Peter Elwelu, has openly endorsed NRM parliamentary candidate David Calvin Echodu, declaring that Soroti City West can no longer afford weak leadership if it is to unlock meaningful development.

Addressing a charged mobilisation rally in Amen A Ward, Gen. Elwelu said the constituency has remained stagnant for years, largely due to persistent political wrangles that have diverted attention from service delivery. He cautioned that continued divisions would only deepen underdevelopment and deny residents the progress they deserve.

The retired army general praised Echodu as a disciplined, focused, and results-oriented leader, capable of restoring direction and ensuring government programmes translate into tangible benefits for the people.

Gen. Elwelu pointed to the overwhelming crowds attending Echodu’s rallies as a clear signal that residents are eager for change, describing the momentum as proof of growing confidence in the NRM flag bearer.

He called on voters to embrace unity within the ruling party, stressing that cohesion is key to fast-tracking infrastructure, youth programmes, and essential services in Soroti City West.

In his remarks, Echodu reaffirmed his commitment to youth empowerment, improved service delivery, and accountable leadership, pledging to maintain open engagement with the community.

He argued that Soroti City West needs a leader who understands local realities, can effectively mobilise government resources, and is determined to turn policy into action.

Gen. Elwelu’s presence at the rally is widely viewed as a significant political boost to Echodu’s bid, signalling increasing backing from senior NRM figures as the 2026 race gathers momentum.

Echodu is seeking to unseat the incumbent FDC MP Jonathan Ebwalu, presenting himself as the alternative voice for development, stability, and renewed opportunity in Soroti City West.
