Bugiri, Uganda — Twelve people lost their lives in a devastating road accident that occurred at Lwaba Village, Kapyanga Sub-county, along the Jinja–Malaba highway in Bugiri District.
According to local authorities, the incident happened when a boda boda rider attempted to overtake a Kampala-bound trailer. The reckless maneuver reportedly forced the trailer into a collision with an oncoming taxi en route to Tororo. As a result of the impact, the trailer’s container toppled over, crushing the taxi and instantly killing nine occupants.
Three other victims succumbed to their injuries shortly after the accident, bringing the total death toll to twelve. Seven other passengers were critically injured and rushed to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident and urged motorists to exercise extreme caution on the roads. Eyewitnesses described the scene as horrifying, with emergency responders struggling to extract survivors from the wreckage.
The tragic crash has reignited calls for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations, particularly concerning overtaking practices and the condition of heavy-duty vehicles on Uganda’s highways.
